Cancer Center Treats Utility Bill Sticker Shock
Posted July 13th, 2010 by GreenTech Energy Services
Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia recently hired GreenTech to retrofit the lighting in its parking garage. T12 fluorescent fixtures, as well as exit signs lit with incandescent bulbs, were replaced by induction lights, T8 fixtures and new 2-watt LED exit signs. Lighting control panels were installed to turn off lights when the parking garage is closed. Photocells were also installed to turn the lights off when there was enough available daylight. The project improved the safety and security of the garage, decreased energy consumption and utility bills, and enhanced the appearance of the building.
Ribbon and Bow Plant Wraps up Lighting Project, Saving $61,000 a Year

Berwick Offray, an affiliate of CSS Industries, is the world’s largest manufacturer and distributor of decorative ribbons and bows. The company hired GreenTech Energy Services to retrofit the lighting in its main plant in Berwick, Pennsylvania. Outdated 400-watt metal halide fixtures were replaced with new T5 and T8 fixtures with occupancy sensors. In the ribbons and bows department, where all types and sizes of lights were running in different directions, GreenTech removed all fixtures and replaced with new energy efficient lights in a uniform layout. The result was much brighter lighting with better color rendering, which has enhanced quality control in the production areas, created a safer work environment, and raised employee productivity. The project has also significantly reduced carbon emissions, while achieving the company’s main goal of savings energy dollars. “GreenTech has done retrofits in three plants so far, and there has always a savings when the project is complete,” says Dave Fifield, Berwick’s Maintenance Manager. “We hope to retrofit the rest of the plant next year.”

GreenTech Helps Campbell’s Cut Energy Costs
Posted June 18th, 2010 by GreenTech Energy Services
Campbell’s, the world’s leading maker and marketer of soup, has implemented a company-wide strategy to improve the environmental impact of its more than 30 manufacturing facilities, setting goals for energy and water conservation, waste management and recycling. Each plant has been charged with developing its own plan for reducing energy use through a combination of new low-energy technologies, alternative fuels and energy conservation.
In 2009, Campbell’s contracted with GreenTech Energy Services, Inc, to help its plants achieve some of those goals. At the company’s plant in Maxton, N.C., GreenTech replaced metal halide fixtures with T8 fluorescent fixtures that are sealed and gasketed to accommodate a washed-down environment. All T12 technology was eliminated. The plant is noticeably brighter and the new lights run cooler, which is important in a food environment. As a result, working conditions in the plant have been improved while energy consumption and costs have been lowered.
At Campbell’s facility in South Plainfield, NJ, GreenTech replaced 83 outdated T12 fixtures and 67 metal halide fixtures with T8’s, which provide energy efficiency, long lamp life, and high lumen maintenance. Sensors were installed that switch lights off in unoccupied areas of the warehouse. The result was a 40% reduction in energy use, a significant decrease in utility costs, and a payback of only one year. Aesthetically, the space appears brighter and more evenly lit, with less glare and flickering, enhancing the workplace environment and improving employee safety.
During Campbell’s Fiscal Year 2009, they invested over $3,000,000 for lighting projects in four major facilities resulting in annual utility savings in excess of $1,400,000. This coming year, the company plans to spend another $3,000,000 and will anticipate energy savings of over $1,000,000.
“These projects are a great example of the alignment of sustainability and bottom line business impact,” says David Stangis, Campbell’s Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility. “At Campbell’s, sustainability not only means improved environmental performance, it means increased efficiency and cost savings.”

GreenTech recently participated in an Energy Efficiency Roundtable hosted by the Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation (www.aaedc.org). The conference, attended by local business leaders, covered topics such as energy use assessments, energy savings strategies, incentives for implementation and successful case studies. The event took place at the Staples Distribution Facility in Hanover, MD, which has the largest rooftop solar installation in Maryland, producing over 1.2 million kWh of clean solar energy in one year and offsetting 43 million pounds of CO1. All the lighting within the facility has also be retrofitted, cutting utility bills and energy consumption by nearly 50%. |
