There are two directions to take when approaching a lighting project – retrofitting the existing fixtures or replacing them. The simplest option is a retrofit, which entails replacing components one a one-to-one basis, making sure that light levels are maintained by selecting the right lamp output and ballast factor. However, if the lenses are discolored or cracked, the wiring is in bad shape, the reflectors are dirty, or the fixture is generally in poor condition, it may be more appropriate to replace the entire fixture. Another instance where this would be the better option is when the building owner is interested in redesigning the lighting system. Sometimes a building is purchased and re-purposed in such a way that existing lights are insufficient for the new task areas. In other cases, the existing lights are too far apart or unevenly spaced, leaving areas of shadow or glare. A redesign will reduce eye fatigue, enhance aesthetics, and improve quality control, safety and security.
